چکیده

Beginning with this issue, the Journal of Paleontology will be publishing an occasional section entitled ‘‘View from the Field’’. ‘‘View from the Field’’ will provide a forum for concise commentary on current issues in paleontology, including but not limited to discussion of methods, important new discoveries, and major conceptual advances. Contributions should be brief (no more than 12 double-spaced typewritten pages). Submissions will be vetted for appropriateness by the Editors and subject to peer review prior to acceptance. Enquiries and submissions should be directed to the Journal of Paleontology Special Projects Editor, Dr. Jonathan Adrain, Department of Geoscience, 121 Trowbridge Hall, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242. Depositional History and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Tirgan Formation (Barremian – Aptian) in the Zavin section, NE Iran

The Tirgan Formation (Barremian – Aptian) is exposed in the Kopet Dagh in northeast Iran. One stratigraphic section in Zavin was measured with a thickness of 110 meters. This Formation in section consists of three parts (including lower carbonate, limy shale – marl and upper carbonate rocks). Based on the study of 94 thin sections, 10 carbonate and 2 siliciclastic lithofacies have been identifi...

Coastal barrier stratigraphy for Holocene high-resolution sea-level reconstruction

The uncertainties surrounding present and future sea-level rise have revived the debate around sea-level changes through the deglaciation and mid- to late Holocene, from which arises a need for high-quality reconstructions of regional sea level. Here, we explore the stratigraphy of a sandy barrier to identify the best sea-level indicators and provide a new sea-level reconstruction for the centr...

Phylogenetic relationships of the commercial marine shrimp family Penaeidae from Persian Gulf

Phylogenetic relationships among all described species (total of 5 taxa) of the shrimp genus Penaeus, were examined with nucleotide sequence data from portions of mitochondrial gene and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). There are twelve commercial shrimp in the Iranian coastal waters. The reconstruction of the evolution phylogeny of these species is crucial in revealing stock identity that ca...

Estimation of relative effectiveness of phylogenetic programs by machine learning

Reconstruction of phylogeny of a protein family from a sequence alignment can produce results of different quality. Our goal is to predict the quality of phylogeny reconstruction basing on features that can be extracted from the input alignment. We used Fitch-Margoliash (FM) method of phylogeny reconstruction and random forest as a predictor. For training and testing the predictor, alignments o...

On simulated annealing phase transitions in phylogeny reconstruction

Phylogeny reconstruction with global criteria is NP-complete or NP-hard, hence in general requires a heuristic search. We investigate the powerful, physically inspired, general-purpose heuristic simulated annealing, applied to phylogeny reconstruction. Simulated annealing mimics the physical process of annealing, where a liquid is gently cooled to form a crystal. During the search, periods of e...
